Hand Aesthetic Survey Study Grant Print
Researcher: Douglas M. Rothkopf, MD

Grant Award: ASERF Interim Grant

Amount Awarded: $5,550

Project Name: Hand Aesthetic Survey Study Grant

Project Summary: Besides the face, the hand is the most visible body part that contributes greatly to an individual’s overall specific image and perceived age.1 Hand rejuvenation is becoming an increasingly popular procedure in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery.2 Numerous interventions such as fat grafting, injectable filler, light/laser therapy and others have been studied with overall patient satisfaction.2 However, no studies have been evaluated general population perspectives on factors of contributing to the aesthetic appearance of the hand. The purpose of this study is to explore what the general population perceives as features that most contribute to an aesthetically pleasing hand, and to compare the relative import of wrinkes, sun damage, prominent veins, volume loss and pigmentation in overall appearance. We hope that the results of this study will guide patients and surgeons in optimizing outcomes in cosmetic hand surgery.

We hypothesize that prominent veins and volume loss will contribute the most to the perception of an attractive hand.
