Breast Surgery pioneer and icon Dr. Scott Spear to posthumously receive the ASERF 2018 Career Achievement Award Print

The Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) is pleased to announce that Dr. Scott Spear will posthumously be awarded the 2018 ASERF Career Achievement Award. The presentation will take place at the Member Business Meeting to be held during The Aesthetic Meeting 2018 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City on Sunday, April 29.

Quite simply, Dr. Spear was an icon in the field of aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, widely viewed as one the brightest and most creative thinkers in the specialty.  Of his many accomplishments, he may be best known for being a pioneer and tireless advocate for nipple-sparing mastectomy that has revolutionized reconstructive breast surgery.  Dr. Spear was instrumental in helping to end the longstanding FDA restrictions on the use of silicone gel breast implants and provided creative solutions for improved outcomes in primary and secondary breast implant surgery.

Dr. Spear was a gifted and innovative educator. As the founding Chairman and longtime chief of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Georgetown University, he helped mentor and train multiple generations of residents and fellows over many years.  Dr. Spear was a fixture as a speaker at ASAPS’s annual meetings and sponsored symposia, and authored many papers and textbooks on all aspects of aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery. Among his favorite accomplishments was the creation of the Royal and Ancient Society of American Plastic Surgeons (RASAPS), a think tank of many of the nation’s top plastic surgeons who, in lieu of a conference room, have used the world’s most popular golf destinations as their office to discuss how to innovate and improve the specialty.

Dr. Spear was about family and friendships. This will be his greatest legacy and the gift that he shared with so many. When he passed away suddenly on March 16, 2017, he was survived by his wife Cindy, daughters Alexandra and Geri, and son Louis. (Cindy will be present at the ceremony to receive the award in New York.)

To honor this ground-breaking surgeon, please join us in making a tax-deductible contribution to ASERF. You can make your gift at ASERF’s donation page and even add a personal message in the Comments field.

Your tribute to Dr. Spear will be used to fund valuable research for aesthetic plastic surgery. It will also serve as a nod to his distinguished career and legacy. We look forward to seeing you in New York on April 29 and join us in showing our gratitude to Dr. Spear’s invaluable contribution to our specialty.

ASERF Membership Approves Updates to Bylaws Print

The Aesthetic Surgery Education & Research Foundation (ASERF) Board of Directors circulated Bylaws changes that were approved by the membership via electronic vote just prior to The Aesthetic Meeting in San Diego. Two categories of membership were eliminated, Life and Emeritus. These categories were counter to the goal of the Foundation – to raise money to support aesthetic surgery research. Donors who make significant contributions are now recognized via the President’s Circle. Other approved revisions include housekeeping updates.

The Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation Elects Barry DiBernardo, MD as New President Print

San Diego, CA  (April 30 , 2017) – The Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) today elected New Jersey-based plastic surgeon Barry DiBernardo, MD as its new President. ASERF is the philanthropic research and education arm of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) whose mission is to identify and pursue those issues relevant to the advancement, effectiveness and safety of aesthetic surgery through directed research and education for the purpose of benefiting patients, physicians and the entire field of medicine.

Dr. DiBernardo, Medical Director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery, is also an associate clinical professor in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a past president of the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons. He also serves on the advisory board to many leading skincare and injectable technology companies worldwide.

As President of ASERF, Dr. DiBernardo’s goals will include providing a means for interested ASAPS and ASERF members to conduct clinical aesthetic research online, addressing criticism of biased corporate research in aesthetic products, and exploring new funding options for ASERF-supported research.

Having taught my first instructional course in Clinical Photography at an ASAPS meeting as a plastic surgery resident, it is a great honor to now lead its research arm ASERF, as President, 27 years later. Having dedicated the last 25 years in Plastic Surgery to education and research in aesthetics, it is an exciting time to take the helm of such a robust research and education-based group”, DiBernardo states.

DiBernardo graduated from Cornell University Medical College in 1984, receiving the institution’s Charles H. Horn Prize for outstanding leadership and service to the medical community. He spent five years as a general surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Florida, before embarking on a two-year residency in plastic surgery at the Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. In 1991, DiBernardo established his private practice in New Jersey, where he has served as Medical Director ever since. DiBernardo has received the Leo M. Davidoff Award for teaching distinction at Albert Einstein College of Medicine as well as the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons’ National Scientific Exhibit Award.

“Dr. DiBernardo has always been a proponent of research and education, both teaching on an international scale and publishing in medical journals including the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. I can think of no other surgeon in the world who has been at the forefront of as many new technologies as DiBernardo has been - and with each development he has carried out scientific research, published, and taught these techniques to other surgeons.  He has already made an extraordinary contribution to our specialty and with his background and dedication I am sure that he will take ASERF to extraordinary levels,” notes Steven Teitelbaum, MD, Immediate Past-President of ASERF.
